Child Inpatient Services

Children, ages 4–12, are provided 24-hour nursing care in a secure environment at Wellstone Regional Hospital. A pediatric psychiatrist leads the multidisciplinary treatment team to provide the most effective treatment for the child. The psychiatrist works with the treatment team to determine appropriate medications, treatment goals and discharge plans. Nurses, social workers, mental health technicians, and activity therapists will all will work as an interdisciplinary team, providing care to the child. Parents are included throughout the process through social services and nursing.

A structured schedule is followed throughout the day that involves goal setting, a variety of therapy groups, family meetings, hygiene time, meals, study hall, recreation, quiet time and goal review. This is a very short-term treatment program designed to help the child and family move through the crisis and develop a plan to follow afterward. The length of stay depends on each child’s situation, ranging from a few days up to a couple of weeks.

Throughout the inpatient journey, the staff encourages children to be respectful of themselves, each other and the environment of the hospital. Children have many patient rights including a Patient Advocate that they can speak with at any time. Family visitation occurs on a regular schedule. Phone calls may be made daily, and children may send and receive mail.
