Adolescents

Male or Female Adolescents ages 13–17 are provided 24-hour nursing care in a locked, secure setting. A psychiatrist leads the multidisciplinary treatment team to provide the most effective treatment for the adolescent. Working with the parent/guardian, the treatment team determines appropriate medications, treatment goals, and discharge plans. Nurses, Social Workers, Therapists, Mental Health Technicians, Activity Therapists, and Teachers all will work with each adolescent to achieve stabilization.

A structured schedule is followed throughout the day that involves goal setting, a variety of therapy groups, family meetings, hygiene time, meals, school time, recreation, quiet time and goal review. This is a very short term treatment program designed to help the adolescent and family move through the crisis and develop a plan to follow afterwards. The length of stay depends on each adolescent’s situation ranging from a few days up to a couple of weeks.

Throughout the inpatient journey, the staff encourage adolescents to be respectful of themselves, each other, and the environment of the hospital. A level behavior system allows adolescents to earn additional privileges during their stay. Monitoring of health and safety is of utmost importance with this age group. The unit is inspected daily for contraband or other hazards that may develop. Adolescents have many patient rights including a Patient Advocate that they can speak with at any time. Family visitation occurs on a regular schedule. Phone calls may be made daily, and adolescents may send and receive mail.

We also offer a partial hospitalization program for adolescents coping with severe and persistent mental health problems. This program provides day treatment which includes school instruction and therapies such as individual, group, psychoeducational groups, recreational, horticultural, art, and music.
